Overview
The largest single-campus community college in the state of New York, Nassau Community College is located in a beautiful 225-acre campus in the heart of Long Island. A part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system, this educational institution serves students of all ages and backgrounds. DAY Elevator & Lift, a leading mobility equipment dealer in NY takes pride in assisting this community college with the successful installation of two platform lifts for their front and rear buildings.
The Challenge
ADA guidelines mandate equal opportunities for students with disabilities – they’re entitled to benefit from all the services of those institutions and to use campus facilities. This Nassau Community College is dedicated to providing disabled students with resources and support to gain confidence, become independent, develop learning strategies and skills, and capitalize on their strengths. The challenge in this project was to provide ADA-compliant accessibility to front of building (2 units) for students and staff. The client required us to install two suitable mobility products for the front and rear buildings. The building had decorative entry areas. They required one unit outdoors on self-standing posts. As there was nothing to fasten the lift (rails and system) to, the lift had to be designed for self-supporting lift and base. The indoor unit was to be installed in a decorative lobby with a lot of millwork and paneling. The lift needed to be wall mounted in some areas as well as designed to integrate into the millwork and paneling of the area.
The Solution
It is critical for educational institutions to improve access overall for students, faculty, staff, and visitors, maintain accessible features, inform users of accessible facilities and routes, move services and classes to accessible locations with notice and respond to individual requests in a timely way. Our team surveyed their issues and recommended two inclined platform lifts to improve indoor and outdoor accessibility. We worked with engineering to design the inclined platform lift to fold up while not in use with a concrete base to support the lift system and rated loads. Installation process was smooth and we were able to ideally meet their accessibility requirements.
